Hashtags are a community-driven convention for adding additional context and metadata to tweets. They’re extra tags added inline to posts. Anyone can easily create a hashtag by prefixing a topic with a hash symbol: #hashtag. Hashtags culture is instrumental in enabling a topical taxonomy on top of Twitter, based on subjects of tweets.
Examples:
#jobs #followfriday #nyc
